If you buy a rotary converter can you weld with it? You bet you can if you buy a welder!
Here’s a fun clip that shows, not only can you make your own transformer, and run three phase motors, but you can also, with a little extra wire and a couple of inexpensive diodes, make yourself a welder power supply.
What inspired this was I had purchase a cheap 89 dollar welder from Home Depot in the early 1990's. It worked great for welding up sheet metal but was very frustrating when trying to weld anything heavier.
I decided that since I was making my own transformers why not make a welder power supply
I used my cheap welder for the wire feeder part, and hooked up my own transformer to it. Now I could weld at 180 amps.
I welded a lot of 3 inch pipe together with this setup.
In this video we actually take a homemade transformer and add the welder feature to it. We now have a dual purpose machine. As I show in the video, we weld and run the vacuum from the same home made transformer.
